An interview of Dr. Mario Vanhoucke concerning his research on schedule characteristics and project forecasting was published in the November 2010 issue of Vlerick Reflect.  The interview is available for download from the Papers page.
Two book reviews of Dr. Vanhoucke’s book, Measuring Time, have recently been made.  One appeared in the November issue of Projects at Work, http://www.projectsatwork.com/content/Articles/260367.cfm. The short paper by Theodoros Tzaveas, “Earned Value Method and Earned Schedule Methodologies Comparison, Greece,” was published on-line by the Institution of Civil Engineers, www.ice.org.uk/News-Public-Affairs/ (at the site, click on “News and public affairs,” then search on “earned value” to locate the paper).  The application is to a bridge construction project in Greece.
Lisa Wolf and Michelle Jones presented, “The Booz Allen ‘Earned Schedule’ Experience” at the International Integrated Program Management Conference held 8-10 November in Bethesda, Maryland.
Walt Lipke made a presentation at the second EVA-Europe Conference held 24-25 November in Ghent, Belgium.  The presentation “Schedule Adherence and Rework,” describes the method for calculating the value of the rework caused by out of sequence task performance.  The SA Index & Rework calculator is posted on the ES Calculator page.
Preceding the EVA-Europe Conference, Walt Lipke and Kym Henderson held a one-half day Earned Schedule Awareness Session sponsored by X4P/Belgium.

Robert Van De Velde has reviewed the Earned Schedule book in the August issue of PMWorldToday.  His review is available from the link here (PMWorldToday Book Review) and at the ES Book section.
The article, “Managing the Unexpected with Earned Schedule” by Dr. Van De Velde was published in the October issue of PMWorldToday (http://www.pmworldtoday.net/featured_papers/2010/oct/Managing-the-Unexpected.html).
A recently identified article, “A Comparison of Three Completion Date Predicting Methods for Construction Projects,” by Thammasak Rujirayanyong was published in Volume 6 (Oct-Dec 2009) of the Journal of Research in Engineering and Technology by the faculty of engineering at Kasetsart University, Thailand.  The article is downloadable from the Papers area.
The VisiTrend EVM analysis tool for Microsoft Project has recently added Earned Schedule capability.  Check the brief description on the EVM-ES page and use the link provided to obtain a free trial version.  
April - June 2010
On 10 June, Alex Davis of the UK APM EVM Specific Interest Group indicated the long awaited ES whitepaper has been publicly released.  It may be accessed at the following link, http://www.apm5dimensions.com/news/earned-schedule-white-paper.  The paper’s intent is to generate interest in the use of ES so as to validate the performance of the method.
Ray Stratton has reported that his review of the ES book has been re-published in the AACE journal. Mr. Stratton’s review is also available in the February 2010 newsletter at www.mgmt-technologies.com and the Projects at Work website, www.projectsatwork.com.   
The Ehsal Management School in Brussels, Belgium has begun a new project management training course, which includes ES.  Of the 19 three and one-half hour sections comprising the course, one is devoted to ES.  The ES section is taught by Stephan Vandevoorde.
Dr. Robert Creese and Yi Fang co-authored the ES research paper published in the 2009 AACEI Transactions.  The paper, “Time Based Estimate Duration for Completion of Construction Projects,” may be obtained through the purchase of the transactions at the AACEI Bookstore, https://www.aacei.org/PortalTools/Shopper/Index.cfm.
Robert Van De Velde is preparing a very extensive upgrade to his project management EVM/ES analysis tool.  Some of the added features include: selectable scope of analysis, To Complete Indexes for cost and schedule, performance management color coding with recommended corrective action, statistical forecasting, and several user input settings.  Look for the availability of the upgraded tool at www.projectflightdeck.com.  
Supertech Project Management, Inc. and Pariyojana Consulting Services announced on May 3, 2010 the signing of a marketing agreement for the project control software product EVEngineTM, a product that includes ES computations and analysis.  Within the agreement, Pariyojana Consulting Services, will directly market the product and develop a network of marketing partners in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutna, Sri Lank, and Maldives.   
The Measurable News (Issue 2, 2010) includes a short description of the Earned Schedule book. The description includes a synopsis, a discussion of the reviews made, and a description where it may be obtained.  Also included is an excerpt describing the genesis of the Earned Schedule method.  The book description may be accessed at http://www.pmi-cpm.org/pages/home/index.html by opening the Measurable News and clicking the spring issue of 2010.
The 2nd EVA Europe conference is to be held in Ghent, Belgium on November 24 & 25, 2010. Clicking the EVA Europe 2010 logo on the ES website page will link to the conference website (http://www.eva-europe.eu/2010/) for presentation submission, conference attendance and registration information.     
January - March 2010
An article published in 2008 discussing Earned Schedule was recently identified from an internet search.  The article written in English comes from Poland.  It is made available on the Papers page. The author of “Earned Value Method as a Tool for Project Control” is Agata Czarnigowska.
Project manager, Chris Vizzuett of Kellogg, Brown, and Root, has graciously provided a presentation made in March to PMI Queensland (Australia) Chapter.  The presentation discusses lessons learned from the application of ES to a water supply construction project.
Alex Davis has provided information concerning the publication of the ES White Paper by the UK Association for Project Management.  The paper is approved and will have an official public release to several engineering and professional publications in the UK in the very near future.  For those interested, the availability and cost of the UK APM publication will be posted when known.
Dr. Ofer Zwikael, Deputy Head of the School of Management, Marketing, and International Business of The Australian National University indicates he will publish a book containing a section on ES later this year through Springer UK.  When published, its availability will be announced in a future news item.
The Earned Schedule book has received several reviews since its publication.  Four reviews are posted on the Amazon website (www.amazon.com) with two of the four also appearing on the Barnes and Noble website (www.barnesandnoble.com).  Another review has been made by Ray Stratton.  Mr. Stratton’s book review is available from two sources, the Mgmt-Technologies and the Projects@Work websites.  From the homepage of www.mgmt-technologies.com, click on “Our Newsletters.”  When that page opens scroll down and click on the “February 2010 Issue.”  An alternative to obtain the same review is to use www.projectsatwork.com.  On the home page find “Review: Earned Schedule” beneath the heading “News, Views & Issues.”  Click on the link to bring up the review.  Both sites require registration to enable access to the complete review.  There is no charge involved for either site.      
Dr. Mario Vanhoucke of the University 0f Ghent, Belgium has authored the book Measuring Time. The book, published in January 2010 by Springer UK, is focused on examining the various methods of schedule analysis utilizing earned value measures, and specifically examines the extended characteristics of Earned Schedule.  For the academic research work involved in this treatise, Dr. Vanhoucke received the 2008 Research Award from the International Project Management Association.  His book is available from Amazon and Barnes and Noble in hardback for $119 USD. As a preview of his book Dr. Vanhoucke has recently published an article in The Measurable News, “Measuring Time: An Earned Value Performance Management Study.”  The article is available for download from the Papers page.
Dr. Gary Richardson, a professor of graduate level study of project management at the University of Houston, has published a book, Project Management Theory and Practice.  His book includes Earned Schedule in its discussion of Earned Value Management.  The book, intended as a course textbook, not only addresses theory and practice but includes valuable history, as well. Dr. Richardson’s book is available in hardback from Amazon and Barnes and Noble and is priced at $89.95 USD.
