November - December 2011
A giant of project management, Eric Jenett, passed away October 20, 2011 in Houston, Texas. Mr. Jenett was one of the co-founders of the Project Management Institute, the global organization for project managers.  A wonderful tribute to Mr. Jenett, written by David Pells, was published in the December issue of Project Management World Today (http://www.pmworldtoday.net/in_tribute/2011/dec/Eric-Jenett.html). The tribute is available from this site as a link from the News page. It is highly recommended to read about the impact on project management made by Mr. Jenett. Many of us stand now upon the foundation he had great influence in building.
In the July-October News update, mention was made of the newly published 2nd edition of the PMI EVM Practice Standard. Appropriately, due to the significance of the document, further announcement has been suggested by one of the authors, Kym Henderson, as follows:

PMI EVM Practice Standard 2nd Edition
The PMI EVM Practice Standard, 2nd edition, has been released October 2011 by PMI at the Global PMI Congress held in Dallas, Texas.

Hardcopy versions of the 2nd edition are available online for purchase from PMI at
http://marketplace.pmi.org/Pages/default.aspx?Category=EarnedValue

An online "read only" .PDF version has been posted in the members only area of the PMI website.  It is located under the Guides and Standards and then Library of PMI Global Standards menu options after logging on.

The new standard provides a much more comprehensive coverage of EVM than the first edition and includes a series of new Appendices.  Appendix D, "Schedule Analysis Using EVM Data" includes coverage of Earned Schedule (up to and including the "P" factor measure of schedule adherence) which is expected to increase global interest and uptake of the method.

As reported in an earlier News update, the Japanese translation of the Earned Schedule book by Kotaro Mizuno was recently published. Contact has been made for the creation of three additional language translations: Spanish, Portuguese, and Chinese.  Work has begun researching a publisher for these projects.  Stay tuned for the availability of these translated versions.
The third annual Europe EVM conference was held 23-24 November, 2011 in Valencia, Spain. Walt Lipke made two presentations, “Earned Schedule Application to Project Management” and “Why Should CPI = 1?”  Although the second presentation concentrates on cost, connection to schedule is made, as well.  One of Dr. Mario Vanhoucke’s graduate students, Mathieu Wauters, from the University of Ghent made a presentation of his research involving Earned Schedule, “A Forecasting Study to Predict EAC(t).”  These presentations are made available on the Presentations page.
Added to the ES Book link is an area describing the errata discovered to the present date.  The findings from the paperback are in general very minor.  However, an appalling discovery was made for the e-book versions.  The statistical equations in Chapter 12 were not converted accurately. Action has been initiated with the publisher to make corrections.  Although a corrected e-book version will be published, there is, unfortunately, no avenue to correct the e-books purchased.  To ease the problem for those that have the e-book, a link is available for downloading the pdf file of Chapter 12.
July - October 2011
PMI has published its 2nd edition of the EVM Practice Standard.  The release was made at the recent PMI Global Congress held 22-25 October in Dallas, Texas.  The standard contains the appendix, “Schedule Analysis Using EVM Data.”  A considerable portion of the appendix is devoted to the Earned Schedule methods.  The practice standard is available for purchase from the PMI Marketplace, http://marketplace.pmi.org/Pages/ProductDetail.aspx?GMProduct=00101262001.
Dr. Mario Vanhoucke, Ghent University, recently was awarded research funding in excess of one million Euro from the Flemish government for his proposal, “Searching for static and dynamic project drivers to predict and control the impact of management/contingency reserve on project’s success.”  For more information: research project.
Two publications and a presentation were forwarded to me by Stephan Vandevoorde for posting onto the website.  The presentation, “A Neat Solution for the EVM Schedule Problem,” is by Bill Locke and was made to the PMI Washington DC Chapter ( Fair Lakes ).  The two publications are “Project Performance Reporting and Prediction: Extensions of Earned Value Management” (Czarnigowska, Jaskowski, and Biruk) and “Analysis of Project Performance of a Real Case Study and Assessment of Earned Value and Earned Schedule Techniques for the Prediction of Project Completion Date” (Tzaveas, Katsavounis, and Kalfakakou).  These papers were authored by professors from universities in Poland and Greece .
Mr. Lipke published two articles in PM World Today.  The article, “Schedule Adherence and Rework,” was published in the July issue, while “Further Study of the Normality of CPI and SPI(t)” appeared in the October issue The articles are downloadable from the Papers page and are also available at www.pmworldtoday.net.
Mr. Lipke had two papers published in The Measurable News (2011, Issue 2).  All of the papers are made available on the Papers page, but may also be accessed through the link provided, http://www.pmi-cpm.org/pages/measurable_news/5.00.measurable_news.html .  The papers are:
