October - December 2013
Stephan Vandevoorde began the EVM Europe 2013conference, held 3-4 December in Ghent, Belgium, with his keynote, “Time Forecasting Using Earned Schedule.” His presentation covered project management application and research collaboration with Dr. Mario Vanhoucke and the University of Ghent. Two other presentations at the conference elaborated on research involving ideas from Earned Schedule. These presentations were. “Using the P-factor to Monitor Concurrent Engineering Projects with a Variable Chance of Rework,” and “Classification of Risk Analysis and Project Control Performance on Empirical Project Data.”
Walt Lipke made two presentations, as well, at EVM Europe. One was the keynote, “Earned Schedule – Ten Years After,” while the second was titled, “Measurement – Who Needs It?” The keynote was in recognition of the 10th year anniversary of the publication of “Schedule Is Different” in The Measurable News. After the keynote, Dr. Vanhoucke, discussed the impact made by ES in project management and academic research. At the conclusion of the conference, with his wife Gaetane, Dr. Vanhoucke presented Walt with an award in recognition of the creation of ES.
Mr. Paulo Andre’ has completed the Portuguese translation of the Earned Schedule book and has been successful in receiving an ISBN (978-85-916680-1-4). His ebook is titled Prazo Agregado and is available for purchase from Amazon.
On February 27 Dr. Robert Van De Velde will present a webinar, “Earned Schedule for Agile Projects,” The webinar is hosted by the College of Performance Management. Dr. Van De Velde will explain AgileES and its added value for managing Agile projects. The five steps for implementing AgileES will be described, as well as outlining future extensions to the technique. Webinar attendees will be given a link to a free tool for calculating Agile Earned Schedule metrics.  More information and registration are available at http://www.mycpm.org/news-events/webinars/.
July - September 2013
Walt Lipke had two articles published during July and August. “Is Something Missing From Project Management,” appeared in the 25th anniversary issue of CrossTalk, while the other, “Earned Schedule – 10 Years After,” was in 2013 Issue 3 of The Measurable News. Mr. Lipke was invited by the CrossTalk publisher last November to be a contributor to the anniversary celebration issue. The article expresses the relevance of EVM and ES to good project management. The 2nd article was requested by The Measurable News as follow-on to the keynote presentation Lipke made during May at EVM World 2013. Both articles are available on the Papers page for download.
Stephan Vandevoorde’s presentation from EVM World 2013 is now posted on the Presentation page and is available for download, as well. The presentation, “Time Forecasting Using Earned Schedule: The European Experience,” describes the incredible amount of research generated at the University of Ghent (Belgium), devoted to understanding the implications of ES.
The Portuguese translation of the Earned Schedule book will be available soon on Amazon. The language translation and publication is being performed by Brazilian, Paulo Andre’ de Andrade. When available, the internet link will be posted in similar manner to the Japanese translation.
Alex Davis, an advocate of ES in the UK and project control manager on defense projects, has been working on extending ES to the methodology of Critical Chain. He is presently testing the ideas and has future plans for publishing the experiment results along with presenting at conferences. We look forward to his findings.
From Spain, Jose Ontiveros has disclosed that his new tool, WIPBI, is now available to assist project managers with creating dashboards from commonly used scheduling tools and project management indicators. ES is incorporated into the tool for forecasting project duration. Free access is available at http://www.wipbi.com. Everyone is invited to apply the tool to their projects. Feedback and evaluation are welcomed.
Three ES calculators have been updated on the website. The changes are primarily cosmetic. The calculators changed include: P-Factor (v1b), Statistical Forecasting Calculator & Instructions (v2c), and Prediction Analysis (v1). The P-Factor calculator is now un-locked, making project adaptation more readily accomplished. The Statistical Forecasting Calculator now has the capability to omit early data points having volatile behavior.
April - June 2013

Due to this being the 10th year of Earned Schedule, the EVM World Conference, held 29-31 May in Naples, Florida, hosted a presentation track on the analysis method. Six extremely good presentations were made. With the exception of Stephen Vandevoorde’s, all presentations are accessible for download from the CPM website and this site, as well. Mr. Vandevoorde’s presentation is withheld until after it is presented at the upcoming Europe EVM Conference in December. Following is a listing of the six presentations for referencing:

ES01 – Title: “Advancing Project Duration Forecasting”
  Presenter: Walt Lipke

ES02 – Title: “Do You Trust Your IMS?”
Presenters: Alexander Schostag & Yancy Qualls

ES03 – Title: “AgileES – Earned Schedule for Agile Projects”
Presenter: Dr. Robert Van De Velde

ES04 – Title: “Earned Schedule: Utility in Major U.S. Air Force Acquisition Programs”
  Presenter: Captain Kevin Crumrine

ES05 – Title: “Time Forecasting Using Earned Value/Earned Schedule Methods – the European Experience"

The keynote presentation for the 3rd day of the EVM World Conference, “Earned Schedule – 10 Years After,” was made by Walt Lipke. As follow up to the presentation, an article was requested for the next issue of The Measurable News (2013 Issue 3). The article will be made available with the next website update.
Walt Lipke’s article, “Earned Schedule Contribution to Project Management” (PM World Journal, Sep 2012), was recently re-published in the Russian Project and Program Management Journal (No.2 (34) May 2013). The Russian language version is unavailable from the ES site.
Another article by Walt Lipke, “Schedule Adherence …a useful measure for project management,” was re-published in the June 2013 issue of PM World Journal.
Capt. Kevin Crumrine’s and Lt. Col. Ritschel’s significant article, “A Comparison of Earned Value Management and Earned Schedule as Schedule Predictors on DoD ACAT I Programs,” was published in The Measurable News (2013 Issue 2). The conclusion from their research is “This research finds Earned Schedule to be a more timely and accurate predictor than Earned Value Management (schedule indicators).”
The popularity of the ES website continues to increase. The number of requests set a new record high of 63,611 in April, followed by 60,827 in May.
January - March 2013
Yancy Qualls, Manager of Program Scheduling at Bell Helicopter, has volunteered  his paper and presentation made at the 2010 College of Scheduling conference held in Calgary, Canada. The title of the paper and presentation is “Applying Earned Schedule Principles in a Non-EVM Environment.” Mr. Qualls describes a method, he fittingly names “Earned Schedule – Lite,” on how to apply ES concepts in the absence of EVM measures or resource-loaded activities.
In February, Bill Locke presented “A Neat Solution for the EVM Schedule Problem” to the Washington D.C. Chapter of PMI. Mr. Locke indicated the material was well received by forwarding this: “Material seemed to connect with the audience - lots of positive head nods. One "earned value management analyst / lead" (on her business card) actually seemed stunned by the concept - "where did you hear about this and what made you interested?"
A new calculator is added to the website, “Prediction Analysis Calculator.” The calculator facilitates analysis of the likelihood of achieving the desired project duration using the To Complete Schedule Performance Index.
This coming year will mark the 10th year of Earned Schedule. Two conferences will bring focus to the schedule analysis extension to EVM. These conferences are EVM World 2013 (May) and EVM Europe 2013 (Dec.). In recognition of the decade of ES, Walt Lipke is to be a keynote speaker at EVM World. Additional information may be obtained by directly accessing the websites for the conferences. The link to the EVM Europe website is available by the clicking the logo on the ES homepage. Also, information concerning the Europe conference is available from two Measurable News articles. One assesses and describes the 2012 conference, while the second article provides information about the coming 2013 conference.
The popularity of the ES website continues to increase. The number of requests set a new record high of 55,834 in March.
